Two people are missing after a boat capsized off the South Taranaki coast on Sunday morning. Police were notified at around 10.15am that a boat had capsized about 200 metres offshore from Patea, with three people on board. One person was located in the water and now receiving treatment. A search was under way to locate the two missing people.

New Zealand writer Maurice Gee has died in Nelson, aged 93. A much-loved, prolific and unassuming literary figure, Gee wrote more than 30 novels for both adults and children. His 1979 novel Under the Mountain was adapted into a TV series in 1981 and a film in 2009. His works for adults include The Plumb Trilogy (1978-83), which is commonly regarded as one of the most significant achievements in New Zealand literature. An earlier novel, In My Father’s Den (1972), was adapted as a film in 2004.
