Above: Sunrise over Kachemak Bay off the Homer Spit. We could have filled several issues of Alaska magazine with driving excursions in the Great Land. Instead, we decided to focus on a few tried-and-true road trips and will direct you to our sister publication The MILEPOST® as the definitive guide to making your way mile by mile throughout every region of the state, along with the places to stop for rest, food, lodging, and activities—as well as how to stay safe and be prepared in remote regions.

Above photo: Bubble-net feeding whales in Southeast. I’m “whale challenged.” Allow me to explain. Though I’ve photographed numerous whales of all species—and even pet a few friendly gray whales in Baja—most of the time, I have zero idea what I’m looking at when I see them. For instance, I have a tough time finding their eyes and distinguishing them from the barnacles, wrinkles, or blotches on their skin.

Whether you’re on Google or Facebook or Instagram, you’ll find photos of Alaska that make you gasp and say, “Whoa! I wish I’d taken that!” It might be a landscape shot of Denali or an eagle in flight, but it’s somehow different than the other thousands you’ve seen before. And that’s because it is. In my workshops, I teach “good, better, best,” in order to take images to the next level. Those images on social media that stop you from scrolling or give you goosebumps?

There’s a saying: there’s no such thing as bad weather if you have the right gear. Because I run trips through the winter months to some of the most inhospitable places on Earth and have damaged a few piggy toes with frostbite, I’ve learned the hard way what it takes to stay safe and (almost) toasty in the frigid north.

There’s Otis and Grazer (featured in our July/August issue) and a bear that guides used to call “Old Sow” until someone said that wasn’t very nice, and they changed it to Looper. At one point I thought a bear was named Starbucks, which I kind of liked, but evidently, I heard it wrong. His name was Scar Butt, which makes sense when you see him. There’s Crimp Ear and Broken Ear and Foster Mom.

"The Wind Will" Sweep Up Readers https://t.co/TFhHdcIAsw grateful for this awesome review on the novel that’s exposing the foster care system through the lives of its young protagonists.

For fans of Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead, please take a minute to pre-order my debut novel, The Wind Will Catch You https://t.co/E4oWxCaoSf, which ships next week. The book follows two siblings in Texas after they're separated in foster care after the death of their parents.
