Before Swetha and Venkat Raju launched their pop-up restaurant Brooklyn Curry Project, they helped their daughter set up a lemonade stand. In May 2021, their daughter Mahati — 6 years old, at the time — wanted to set up a cash register and chalkboard signs to sell drinks and dosas outside the Fort Greene Park Green Market in Brooklyn, New York. Swetha made masala dosas, a traditional South Indian crepe-like pancake made from fermented rice and lentils, for her daughter to sell.

Husband-and-wife team Swetha and Venkat Raju started a South Indian dosa pop-up stand in Brooklyn, New York, while juggling full-time jobs and parenting two children. They started out cooking for their neighbors, closed their stand when the crowds became too large for the area and moved to a commercial kitchen in downtown Brooklyn. Brooklyn Curry Project brought in more than $8,100 in median monthly revenue, excluding cash payments, in 2024, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It.
