The Brampton, Ont. man, accused of starting a devastating fire that destroyed an historic building in downtown Orillia could soon be resolving his charges. Brandon Costa, 35, who was living in Orillia at the time of the fire, is accused of setting fire to the building at the corner of Peter and Mississaga streets in the early morning hours of January 21. He appeared in court from jail in Penetanguishene, where the May 5 court date in Bradford plea court was set.

Days after a Newmarket judge ordered a mistrial in the midst of Harshdeep Binner’s jury trial, Binner is applying for bail. The 26-year-old Brampton man is accused of assaulting Ontario woman Elnaz Hajtamiri in an underground parking lot with a frying pan in late 2021. The mistrial ruling by Justice Vanessa Christie came following an application from Binner’s lawyer, Uma Kancharla. Defence counsel argued the Crown failed to provide disclosure, jeopardizing Binner’s right to a fair trial.

Sheri Bryan has spent the past five years mourning her son’s death. Anthony Conklin, 20, was hit while skateboarding along Mapleview Drive just east of Bayview Drive at about 1:30 a.m. April 9, 2020. “I miss him, and I love him, and I wish he was here with us,” said Bryan from a memorial created on the fence along Mapleview Drive East, steps from where her son was hit five years ago.

Misconduct charges of discreditable conduct against longtime Barrie police officer, Inspector Valarie Gates under the Police Services Act could soon be heading to a hearing. The hearing dates, along with motions dates, were put on the record during teleconference calls to address two separate counts against Gates, laid in December 2023 and June 2024.
