ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — What was originally thought to be a minor shoulder injury was serious enough for the Los Angeles Angels to transfer reliever Ben Joyce to the 60-day injured list on Friday. The 24-year-old right-hander, whose 105.5-mph fastball to strike out Dodgers utility man Tommy Edman last September was the hardest pitch thrown in the major leagues in 2024, went on the 15-day injured list because of shoulder inflammation on April 11.

ANAHEIM — Tomoyuki Sugano gave up one run and three hits in 7 1/3 innings, Gunnar Henderson hit a solo homer and drove in an insurance run in the ninth with a triple, and the Baltimore Orioles snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Sugano (4-2) used a six-pitch mix to strike out five and walk none during a 93-pitch effort in which he threw 65 strikes.

By MIKE DiGIOVANNA Reid Detmers, who was rocked for 12 runs and 11 hits while retiring one batter in his previous three appearances, relieved Hendricks with two on and no outs in the sixth. The left-hander struck out Holliday, got Laureano to fly to center and Rivera to line out to second to keep the Angels close. Henderson's fourth homer of the season snapped a streak of 16 straight games in which the Orioles had not scored in the first inning.

RT @SamBlum3: The Angels have now used 19 different relief pitchers this season. It's May 9.

#SaltyPlunk on a rampage tonight ...

They've played the Cubs 7 times, the Braves 6, the Phillies and Tigers. Come on, man. "Coasting" -- to the best record in the NL. They must be awfully good to do that.

Not sure how this stat combo is possible, but it's true: The #Angels have a 7.15 bullpen ERA, the second-worst mark in MLB. Yet their relievers have combined to throw 118 1/3 innings, the fewest in MLB. So their bullpen woes are not a function of being overworked.
