    CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Bobby Galvan Sr., the father of 94th District Court Judge Bobby Galvan and the son of a founding member of LULAC, has died. Galvan was a talented and important musical figure in the Coastal Bend. His father, Rafael Galvan built the Galvan Ballroom at the corner of Agnes Street and Crosstown Expressway on the city’s Westside in 1949. It hosted well-known jazz musicians like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra.

    CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — With the passage of Proposition 4 last November, Texas voters overwhelmingly granted themselves an $18 billion property tax cut. Although it took more than six months to accomplish and required a regular legislative session and two special sessions, Texas lawmakers took a historic budget surplus and used part of it to help the homeowner. But Prop 4 also included something else: Elected appraisal officials for any county with a population of more than 75,000.

But in our part of the state, part of the struggle seems to be in finding black candidates who are both willing and able to run for elected office. Look at the websites for both the Republican and Democratic parties of Nueces County and you will see pictures of people hoping to get your vote in the upcoming primary election.
