The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, unanimously approved the second and final reading of Ordinance 1946 creating a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) for the prime area of downtown Rockport, including the Rockport harborfront property that has been fenced off for more than 30 years. Andrew Kane, who posted a petition/poll on social media, said, “Social media blew up this past weekend,” adding that 82% of those answering the poll opposed the TIRZ.

The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, unanimously approved on second and final readings ordinances setting the 2024 tax rate, as well as new rates for wastewater, water, utility surcharge fee, and utility services. A public hearing regarding the 2024-25 budget was also held, followed by the budget’s passage on a single required reading. The new tax rate is $0.405294, effectively a 14.57% increase in the rate.

I love it when I get asked to cover something that is rarely seen in today’s world. I was asked to come to First Baptist Church Friday, July 26 to maybe take a picture of two wonderful people who were getting married. I did more than take a few pictures. I smiled … a lot. Jo Betty Hise, 91, and Jesse Thomas Ray, 77, tied the knot with Pastor Scott Jones, PhD officiating. I just wish every individual in Aransas County under the age of 30 could have witnessed the special event.

Back in May 2022 Aransas County Navigation District (ACND) commissioners heard a report about an experimental wave break solution for the Little Bay shoreline along Broadway St. In August 2022 a small section of the experimental wave breaks were installed in front of Yarbaritas. (Note: Erosion continually threatens Broadway, a street owned by the City of Rockport.
