Downtown TIRZ approved on final reading

The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, unanimously approved the second and final reading of Ordinance 1946 creating a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) for the prime area of downtown Rockport, including the Rockport harborfront property that has been fenced off for more than 30 years. Andrew Kane, who posted a petition/poll on social media, said, “Social media blew up this past weekend,” adding that 82% of those answering the poll opposed the TIRZ.
City budget, tax rate approved

The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, unanimously approved on second and final readings ordinances setting the 2024 tax rate, as well as new rates for wastewater, water, utility surcharge fee, and utility services. A public hearing regarding the 2024-25 budget was also held, followed by the budget’s passage on a single required reading. The new tax rate is $0.405294, effectively a 14.57% increase in the rate.
Council turns down rezoning, CUP requests

The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, turned down a rezoning request, and denied a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) that was originally approved on first reading, and was then postponed until additional information was received. The council denied the request to rezone, from R1 (1st Single Family Dwelling District) to R3 (Duplex Dwelling District, property located at 1117 N.

I love it when I get asked to cover something that is rarely seen in today’s world. I was asked to come to First Baptist Church Friday, July 26 to maybe take a picture of two wonderful people who were getting married. I did more than take a few pictures. I smiled … a lot. Jo Betty Hise, 91, and Jesse Thomas Ray, 77, tied the knot with Pastor Scott Jones, PhD officiating. I just wish every individual in Aransas County under the age of 30 could have witnessed the special event.
Experimental wave breaks do their job

Back in May 2022 Aransas County Navigation District (ACND) commissioners heard a report about an experimental wave break solution for the Little Bay shoreline along Broadway St. In August 2022 a small section of the experimental wave breaks were installed in front of Yarbaritas. (Note: Erosion continually threatens Broadway, a street owned by the City of Rockport.

Aransas County Navigation District commissioners, at their special meeting Monday, July 22, approved a Stormwater Discharge Ordinance in response to the City of Rockport’s actions to condemn property for an easement so the Concho Street Drainage Project can empty into Rockport Harbor.
Council facing challenging 2024-25 budget

The Rockport City Council, at its workshop Wednesday, July 24, heard a grim report regarding the City’s current financial challenges, as well as actions that need to be taken for the 2024-25 fiscal year. City Finance Director Robbie Sorrell, and City Financial Advisor Bob Henderson were on hand to walk the Council through the numbers, and lay out what needs to be done moving forward.

I hate the way the City of Rockport and the Aransas County Navigation District (ACND) have drawn lines in the sand and made drainage a legal fight. In the end, our bays and harbors will be as clean as possible, but in the meantime, God only knows how much money has or will be spent/wasted on lawyers and legal wrangling. I have no idea how this will all work out in the end, but it appears, as of this writing, the Concho Street Drainage issue is going to end up in the courts.
STEAR evacuation, return runs smooth

Hurricane Beryl is behind us, but for a group of people, those individuals signed up with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR), evacuation from Aransas County was a smooth operation. According to Aransas County Medical Services, Inc. Executive Director Patricia Arnold, who serves as Aransas County’s STEAR Custodian of Records, there are 197 residents on the list. In the end, only 17 residents and seven dogs were evacuated using state assets (buses).
