The 46th edition of the Pole Pedal Paddle, Bend's celebration of the outdoor lifestyle beloved in Central Oregon, will arrive Saturday morning. The multisport race, which starts on the slopes of Mount Bachelor and winds down to the Old Mill District, includes Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, biking, running and paddling, and tests the fitness of the region's serious athletes. But it also champions the whimsy of area residents who compete in colorful costumes.

By Mike Gordon In the sunset years of his life, Dick Higgins was fond of telling people that he was a true survivor. It was no idle boast. He had lived through the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. He was a witness to the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and lived to share the tale. He fought in World War II. He got COVID-19 when he was 99 and survived that, too.

Deschutes County Sheriff's Office deputies needed additional officers, a SWAT team, negotiators and finally two attack dogs to capture a transient who had allegedly shot at a young girl near China Hat Road on Friday afternoon. Nathaniel G. Bennett, 34, of Bend, faces charges that include unlawful use of a weapon, coercion, menacing, attempted assault and reckless endangering, according to a press release from Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Chris Barringer.
