The adage is that when one door closes, another one opens. That is what is happening in Washington. After 25 years of helping students in need with back to school items the Bethel Mall has shut down. The need that project identified and served did not disappear. Now, a new coalition is working to try and fill that need called the Bag of Hope Project. “Bethel Mall stopped and is passing the torch,” said project partner Kerri Dalton. “This is a community based project.

A family centered business is making some changes to freshen up its offerings to customers. Putters Bay is offering a couple of new things, starting with some glow in the dark miniature golf. “It’s our 20th year, and we wanted to offer a little alternative to our normal family recreation and family fun,” said owner Steve Dayton. “It is every Friday, weather permitting through the fall. It’s late at night, because things have to glow. Our holes and ponds are lit.

A longtime fixture at the Washington Times Herald has passed away. Barry Baumert, who manned the presses at the Times Herald for half a century, has died. Baumert had been ill for a lengthy period of time and was living in Amber Manor Nursing Home in Petersburg when he passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80.

WILLOW VALLEY— A tragic Civil War train wreck is being remembered in Martin County. The Martin County Museum is putting together a tribute to Civil War soldiers who died in a crash in the eastern part of the county. A special summer collection day is planned for this week at the Martin County Recycling Center. Janell Freeman, director for the recycling center, says the event is going to be much like those the organization has in the spring and the fall. “We have for years doing cleanups in the spring and fall. We have the events for a full day on Friday and a half-day on Saturday,” she said. “On these days we give people a truckload rate instead of a piece rate.
