The SS Sabre is heading straight for the iceberg and general manager Kevyn Adams seems willing to go down with the ship. But last season was apparently all Ed Gannon's fault. There's my takeaways from Tuesday's pre-draft gathering in Highmark Stadium, the Sabres' temporary home for the week.

The Rochester Americans have entered into a five-year lease agreement with VenuWorks, extending the partnership of the Buffalo Sabres' AHL affiliate in Blue Cross Arena as its operational model changes. Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula will continue to own and operate the Amerks but are divesting themselves of operations of the arena, instead transferring that to VenuWorks last month. The Iowa-based company operates multiple mid-sized arenas and concert/convention venues.

The Buffalo Bisons need a mulligan on their first-half performance and will get one as records are reset to 0-0 and the International League's second-half schedule opens Tuesday night at 6:35 in Sahlen Field. The same can absolutely be said for their opponents.

Among the many negatives of having a decentralized draft this year is not hearing NHL commissioner Gary Bettman dramatically intone, "We have a trade" and feeling a full arena let out some oohs and ahhs in anticipation of the announcement. Now, that doesn't happen too often early in the first round. Didn't happen at all, in fact, in Round 1 in 2023 in Nashville. NHL GMs are a conservative lot by nature and the flat cap of recent years made them even more reticent to deal a top pick.

Former Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer's solid showing on the road Wednesday night for the Buffalo Bisons looks like it will his final injury rehab appearance for the Herd before returning to the Toronto Blue Jays. Scherzer threw well in Buffalo's 14-1 win over the Worcester Red Sox in Polar Park, allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters in 4 1/3 innings.
