A $1.1 million fee that the owner of a vacant single-room-occupancy building on the downtown Granville strip must pay to transform his property into a commercial hotel was the subject of much debate at Vancouver city hall this month. Four councillors at an April 15 council meeting questioned why the fee was so low when the single-room-accommodation (SRA) bylaw states that a building owner can be subject to a payment of $300,000 per room to proceed with the conversion.

The health agency confirmed the details in an email Tuesday after Premier David Eby told reporters earlier in the day that the suspect was under the supervision of a health-care team and compliant with treatment.
