The Seattle Mariners announced in a press release Wednesday that star catcher Cal Raleigh and the club have agreed to a six-year contract extension that spans through 2030 and includes a player option for 2031. Raleigh, 28, had three years left on his initial contract. “This place has always felt like home since I arrived here in Seattle,” Raleigh said in the team’s press release.

First, Seattle let offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb go after just one season on the day following the season finale. News broke Tuesday that the Seattle Mariners and Cal Raleigh are reportedly finalizing a six-year, $105 million contract extension that will keep the slugging catcher with the franchise through at least the 2030 season.

We throw around familiar phrases and clichés when it comes to sports because they are easily relatable, always relevant, and seem to concisely sum up a situation instead of needing a long, rambling explanation (sorry, that part is still going to happen here). There is a reason an aphorism – “hope springs eternal” – surfaces at the start of every baseball season. It’s a beacon of light emerging out of a dark winter, something to cling to amidst the long, helpless existence of being a baseball fan.
