SEATTLE — When infielder Cole Young appeared in the Futures Game in Arlington, Texas, last July, he did so as a Mariners prospect who had recently been promoted to Double-A Arkansas. It was a taste of what loomed, and motivated Young to keep pushing in the hopes of eventually making it to T-Mobile Park.

Carmichaels faced a daunting challenge in Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 1A championship: Could their offense crack Serra Catholic’s dominant pitching and explosive lineup? The answer came swiftly — and mercilessly — as Serra Catholic senior starter Tyler Skaggs delivered a statement performance, silencing Carmichaels with a no-hitter to seal the title in emphatic fashion. “Pitching a no-hitter in a championship is the kind of thing you dream of as a kid,” Serra Catholic skipper Brian Dzurenda said.

The WPIAL baseball championships this week will have a trio of coaches who could earn a spot in the record books. Tripleheaders will be played Tuesday and Wednesday at EQT Park, home of the Washington Wild Things. Riverside coach Dan Oliastro, in his 57th season, has won six titles and a victory in Wednesday’s Class 3A final will make him No. 1 on the all-time list, surpassing McKeesport’s Abby Fallquist, who coached from the late 1920s to the early 1960s.

In the season that marks the 70th anniversary of the greatest playoff pitching run in WPIAL baseball history, Zach Hare is throwing himself into WPIAL lore. Hare is a senior right-hander at Riverside High School who has pitched in all three Riverside playoff wins. And they’ve been much more than three good Hare days. Hare is on the verge of a playoff run of historic proportions, one that is comparable to a spectacular five-game postseason performance by a pitcher in 1955.

When I spoke w/ T.J. McConnell Monday for a story, I found 1 comment really telling about Pacers. "It’s the best locker room I've been in, in terms of good teammates and good guys. ... Every guy wants to see guys next to them succeed. I know that sounds cliché, but it’s true." https://t.co/6hJwnXwEMw

T.J. McConnell (Chartiers Valley grad) of the Pacers is only 9th player from district (WPIAL or City) to make Finals. 4 from WPIAL & 4 from City previously made it. Here are the 8 others who made Finals. Only Maurice Lucas of Schenley won a title in 1977. https://t.co/r4n78neGtr
