    Jan. 15—Neighborhood Academy coach Jordan Marks contends that point guard Courtney Wallace is the best player in the WPIAL. That would be debatable. But numbers don't lie — and Wallace's statistics say he might be at least the best all-around player in the WPIAL. Wallace, a 6-foot-3 senior point guard, is averaging almost a triple-double. He's good for 21.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 9.2 assists a game for the No. 1-ranked team in WPIAL Class 1A.

    When Jeff Ackermann became Baldwin’s boys basketball coach in 2020, he knew all about the Highlanders’ lack of success and knew people thought he was crazy to leave Pine-Richland. But when Ackermann was interviewed after accepting the Baldwin position, he said, “I wouldn’t have taken the job if I didn’t think we were going to win.”Four years later, the Highlanders are winning games at a pace Baldwin hasn’t seen in 40 years. Baldwin is 9-0 and one of only four undefeated teams in the WPIAL.

    The year was 1995, and Danny Holzer was coming off of four years as a basketball assistant coach at Duquesne University. He was a spry 30-year-old who had just taken a job as a high school coach at Upper St. Clair in the WPIAL, but he had his sights set on returning to the college level. “Honestly, I thought in a few years — or sooner — I would be right back in college as an assistant coach,” Holzer said. “I always thought I would be a college coach.
