With Christmas upon us, who doesn’t love a good dose of holiday nostalgia? Looking back at more than a century of holiday history in McHenry County, we share some old front pages and some vintage photographs – the latter courtesy of our local historical societies – that remind us how much has changed, and how much hasn’t: children gathered around trees, light displays in the town square, playing in the snow, the warmth of friends and family.

SYCAMORE – In a show of Christmas spirit, hundreds volunteered as good fellows on a foggy Christmas Eve to deliver more than 1,100 gifts to DeKalb County children in need. For some families, going around Sycamore, DeKalb and Cortland delivering gifts to others on Christmas Eve as part of nonprofit organization Goodfellows is as much a Christmas tradition as chopping down a Christmas tree. That’s the case for DeKalb couple Dave Skudlarek and Kelli Meserole.

POLO – COUNTRY Financial representative Jeanette Linker is proud to support the Polo Fire Protection District with a donation of $1,500. The funds will be used to support the purchase of equipment and other needs. Linker awarded the donation in a recent check presentation. “Our firefighters do so much to protect all of us. The least we can do is to support them with the tools they need for their lifesaving work,” says Linker.

Rush Truck Centers in Huntley is seeking a larger home. The Huntley Village Board heard the truck center’s plans last week to buy 11.5 acres south of its current property at 11816 Route 47, just north of Kreutzer Road. An additional 2.5 acres between the Kishwaukee River and Kreutzer Road are not part of the proposal, according to Huntley documents. The truck center is proposing an estimated 55,000-square-foot truck sale and service center.

A man has died on Christmas Eve after a single-vehicle crash in Sycamore Township, authorities said. Deputies were called to the area of Peace and Freed Road in Sycamore Township at 11:04 a.m. Sunday for a report that a vehicle had driven into a nearby ditch and the driver was unresponsive, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office. Deputies and paramedics from the Sycamore Fire Department removed the driver and attempted life-saving measures, according to the release.
