What can be said about manner in which certain criminal cases are politicized? This aspect would bear some social relevance, if this appeared to really contribute to decrease in crime of the same nature. But it hardly does, if the key motive seems to be that of targeting political rivals. Certainly, those responsible for rape and murder case at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, which continues to hit headlines, should be punished. The doctors and those protesting for justice have the right to do so.

These are very strange days – I have fractured a bone in my foot and am largely confined to a chair at home, with the TV switched on for a large part of the day. About two weeks ago, sitting in a State Government administrative building in Kolkata and discussing about the gruesome rape and murder of a Postgraduate Trainee Doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata, Anamika Gupta (name changed) looked disturbed when she said, “I stay at this Office till around 8 it in the night to complete my work. During COVID days when the office premises were almost empty, we were here till late hours at at night without feeling that I am unsafe.
