On August 9, 2024, a female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College, Kolkata, was brutally raped and murdered in a seminar room on the fourth floor, where she had gone to rest during her night shift. After persistent nation-wide protests, the West Bengal government released a new set of policies to address workplace safety for women. These include assigning female volunteers for night duty, creating CCTV-monitored safe zones, and providing separate rest areas with washrooms for women.

What can be said about manner in which certain criminal cases are politicized? This aspect would bear some social relevance, if this appeared to really contribute to decrease in crime of the same nature. But it hardly does, if the key motive seems to be that of targeting political rivals. Certainly, those responsible for rape and murder case at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, which continues to hit headlines, should be punished. The doctors and those protesting for justice have the right to do so.
