On July 20, Yemen’s Houthi movement stunned the world by using a drone to penetrate Israel’s vaunted Iron Dome defense, killing a civilian in Tel Aviv. In retaliation, Israel bombed the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida in Yemen. The incident was a prime example of the development of an alarming new reality in the Middle East. Iran-led allies in the “Axis of Resistance,” many of them nonstate actors, have evolved over the last year into a formidable bloc.

For too long, progressives have spent their foreign policy energy cleaning up the messes of others. Small groups of dissenters have fought with clarity against disasters like the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the unjustifiable use of torture and extrajudicial detention after 9/11. Many of these same progressives saw the risks of ignoring justice for Palestinians and predicted the tragedy in Gaza. But progressives don’t just oppose policy blunders.

The new U.S. pier off Gaza is back in operational mode, after breaking apart and undergoing a week of repairs. Despite the rocky start, this American initiative could serve as a steppingstone towards a new, more peaceful, post-war Israeli-Palestinian reality. But for this to happen, the U.S. will need to leverage opportunities, address regional skepticism and bring the Palestinians on board. Diplomatic efforts to devise a possible endgame to the war in Gaza are in high gear.

Iraq’s December 2023 governorate council elections, the first local elections since 2013, resulted in major gains for incumbent parties and only a few minor wins for antiestablishment lists. Change-oriented political parties and independent Iraqi politicians won only a few, scattered seats across the country. I have dubbed these reform-oriented groups “change politicians” because their primary objective is disruption of the status quo through the current political system.
