As Noah Mitchell crossed the graduation stage to accept his diploma and deliver his valedictorian speech, there was one chair in the crowd left empty: a memorial for the two people who weren’t able to attend, his mother and grandmother. “It totally felt like they were there, sitting with us,” Noah’s dad, Marcus Mitchell said.

In about two or three months, four-year-old Kay Posey and her diabetic alert dog, Maeve, will become a dynamic duo. “I don’t think that she fully understands yet, but I know once Maeve is home and she’s with us all the time and maybe starts going places with us, Kay will understand like, ‘this is my dog,’” Kay’s Mother, Jessica Drake says.

    LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - A Las Vegas nonprofit wants to stop the backyard breeding of tortoises. Tortoise Group Board Chair, Laura Deitsch, says right now there are about 150,000 pet tortoises in the valley. “That’s just a staggering number, if you think about it,” she says. Deitsch says backyard breeding occurs when a male and female tortoise coexist in the same yard. She says they can produce more than 30 hatchlings in a single breeding season. “They don’t need another tortoise.

    LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - A critically injured nine-year-old is fighting toward recovery after being the sole survivor of a fatal Northeast Valley crash last Tuesday. The driver, the 9-year-old’s mother, died in the crash, along with another adult passenger. According to Metro Police, the crash happened near Carey Ave. and Pecos Road on Tuesday at around 7:40 p.m.Police say speeding was a factor.

(FOX5) - As temperatures surpass triple digits in the Las Vega Valley, FOX5 looks at how first responders and doctors prepare for the valley’s hot summer months, and what they’re already seeing when it comes to heat exposure. Sunrise Hospital Assistant Medical Director, Heber Philips, says they’ve already treated several people for heat exposure this year. Heat related illnesses have a wide spectrum, but they’ve already treated someone for heat stroke, he says.
