Oklahoma’s tribal gaming industry appears to be growing despite an impasse with Gov. Kevin Stitt over legalizing sports betting. If the expansion continues, tribal leaders could be content waiting out Stitt’s final two years in office before working out a deal to bring sports wagering to the state. The governor rolled out a proposal in November to legalize sports betting but exclude tribes from the online market. Tribal leaders dismissed the suggestion.

About a quarter of Osage citizens participated in the tribal nation’s first ever census, results released this week by the northern Oklahoma tribe show. Alice Goodfox, an Osage Nation lawmaker, said that while the data may not reflect all tribal citizens, it still gives Osage officials an idea of what’s working well and what might need to change. It also provides information about Osage language and culture that isn’t captured in the U.S. census.

A new summer food program helped feed at least one in six Oklahoma children in its first month, after several tribal nations stepped in to distribute federal aid rejected by the governor. The program pays families up to $120 per child to cover groceries while school is out of session. At least 160,000 school-age children were signed up for the assistance by June, according to numbers from three of the tribes involved.
