CEDARVILLE -- A part-time Cedarville police officer and former candidate for sheriff was arrested after police found his stepson at his house Friday while he was wanted for absconding from probation. Thomas Wayne Sandusky, 67, of Rudy, was placed on administrative leave without pay until the case is adjudicated, according to Cedarville Police Chief Ken Howard. Sandusky was charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution and brought to the Crawford County Detention Center.

FORT SMITH -- City directors agreed in a 6-1 vote to pay $590,000 to the U.S. Department of Justice and the federal Environmental Protection Agency for 481 sanitary sewer overflows that occurred over 30 months.

FORT SMITH — The city Board of Directors on Tuesday postponed a decision on whether to spend millions on a new slide structure for Parrot Island Waterpark and whether to take sole responsibility for operation and maintenance of the park. City directors on Tuesday voted 6-1 to table the decision until Sept. 3 at the earliest on whether to buy the slide structure for $4.2 million and enter into a lease agreement with Sebastian County regarding the park.

FORT SMITH -- At least four companies involved with building the Fort Smith School District's Peak Innovation Center disagree with the results of a study the district ordered regarding flooding issues the building has had since its opening. The center and/or its parking lot has flooded three times since the building opened in March 2022. The center is a collaboration between the School District and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, but it's owned by the district.

FORT SMITH -- New technology and equipment being used at Baptist Health's Radiation Treatment Center is providing more precise treatment for cancer patients in the River Valley, according to hospital officials. The new Surface Guided Radiation Therapy system provides a multiangle camera that communicates real-time updates to the machine providing radiation treatment to patients.
