The anthem of pro-life feminism over the past twenty or thirty years has been “abortion hurts women.” To my mind, this is a true statement and a good slogan, but it’s difficult to articulate what it truly means. Research on connections between abortion and long-term mental and physical health challenges is scant and disputed. On the other hand, pregnancy, labor, and childbirth are certain to present risks and challenges.

In 1874, two Bostonian women named Bessie Greene and Lilian Freeman Clarke founded an institution for expectant mothers. Known as the Society for Helping Destitute Mothers and Infants (SHDMI), it embraced an approach to charity that was truly American, in a Tocquevillian sense. The SHDMI wanted to help desperate women. But it also placed a high value on both moral responsibility and associational life.

Madeleine McDowell is a historian of the nineteenth century whose research has focused on the religious, cultural, and intellectual history of the English-speaking world. She holds a PhD from the University of Notre Dame and lives in Sacramento with her husband and young children. They are sisters and the co-authors of Pity For Evil.
