The 28-year-old is channelling her grief into becoming a paramedic so she can help people who are experiencing mental health crises. "I want to be a good, compassionate emergency service worker," Sofia said.

In an empty classroom, one night a week, school cleaner Laurie Nelson kneels on the floor and carefully vacuums a surprise artwork into a memory-foam carpeted rug. The weekly display is a smash hit for the young students at Deniliquin North Public School as they enter in the morning, excited to discover the new work of art. Ms Nelson said the displays, which range from majestic stallions to curious penguins, are all about bringing joy to both children and staff. "Everybody loves it," she said.

The corpses of magpies involved in a suspected poisoning in southern New South Wales are being taken for testing by the state's environment watchdog. At least nine magpies have died after a flock in Cootamundra began displaying signs of paralysis and weakness last week. Cooper Street Veterinary Hospital practice manager Karlie Johnston said 30 unwell magpies had been brought into her clinic. "It's really quite distressing," she said.
