    Some of the accused in the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) R260-million fraud and theft case have been found to be living beyond their means, with court revelations showing luxury homes, expensive vehicles, and large cash transactions above their official incomes. This week, the 11 individuals implicated in the fraud scheme targeting the Sassa appeared at the Lenasia magistrate’s court.     Traditional healer and social media personality Makgotso Mofokeng, affectionately known as Gogo Maweni, will spend the whole week in jail. This comes after the Protea magistrate’s court postponed her assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm case to next week.     A total of 166 alive illegal miners, and 78 bodies of deceased ones have been retrieved by the government’s rescue operation at an abandoned mine in Stilfontein, North West, since the operation began on Monday. National Police Spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said as of 1.30pm on Wednesday, 34 alive illegal miners were retrieved and arrested. 18 more bodies retrievedMathe said 18 bodies of deceased illegal miners were retrieved.

    Out of the 106 illegal miners that were retrieved on day two of the government’s rescue operation in Stilfontein, North West, 67 of them are Mozambicans. As of 11.30pm on Tuesday, 51 dead miners and 106 alive illegal miners had been recovered from Shaft 11 of the former Buffelsfontein gold mine in Stilfontein, according to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. Mathe said the 106 illegal miners consist of 67 Mozambicans, 26 Basothos, 11 Zimbabweans, and two South Africans.
