I’m not a big writer. I have worked at The Pitt News for three years now, and this is the first article I’ve written. I am, however, a big reader, and I always have been. I love reading stories about characters, about real people, about history and current events and anything else. I also love grammar — figuring out what works, why it works and why people make the mistakes they do. These two interests melded into a love for editing.

Only an elite bunch of MLB players can boast hitting 300 home runs in their career. Last Sunday, Pittsburgh Pirates all-star Andrew McCutchen joined the elite list after a blast into left field in a 9-2 road win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Sitting in the direct line of the shot by the center fielder was 9-year-old Pirates fan Toren Mehta with his father Vinay. Vinay, born and raised in Pittsburgh, passed down his Bucs fandom to his son.

As vividly as I can see the computer screen in front of me as I type this, I remember lying down in my bed during my first year at Pitt and having a bit of an introspective moment. After moving into the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center hotel — which was only a residence hall option due to the pandemic — I was undecided in a number of ways.

12:02 pm Shane Bieber, Spencer Strider, Eury Pérez, Framber Valdez. These are just some of the big-name MLB pitchers that have hit the injured list within the first month of the 2024 season. That’s not to mention stars like Gerrit Cole, Sandy Alcántara and Kodai Senga, who are all injured long-term. It feels like the sky is falling for pitchers in Major League Baseball. The league, players’ association and fans have reacted quickly to this onslaught of strains, tears and fractures.

In about five months, I’ll be moving 4,000 miles away from home for four and a half months. I chose to study abroad in the beautiful city of Barcelona for obvious reasons, like its warm weather and pretty beaches, but the more forms I sign and plans I make, Pittsburgh’s cold weather, dirty rivers and ugly buildings are looking better and better. When I began dreaming of studying abroad in high school, I imagined myself as independent and powerful.
