    Evanston Police Department has received 13 calls of shots fired since Sept. 1 in the Fifth Ward, according to Dan Russell, a deputy chief at EPD. A vast majority of the calls (10), however, resulted in no evidence of shots fired, Russell said as he described the breakdown of each call at a ward meeting Thursday.  7 of 13 incidents involved shots-fired calls where no evidence was found.

    Last month’s presidential debate was not the first time former President Donald Trump has made derogatory comments about Haiti and Haitians. In 2018, during a bipartisan meeting with senators about immigration, sources said Trump said, “Why do we need more Haitians, take them out,” NBC news reported. And Trump also included the Caribbean nation among “all these shithole countries,” wondering why the U.S. didn’t have more immigrants from European nations like Norway.

    The Land Use Commission unanimously recommended Horizon Realty Group’s fourth attempt at the Legacy project — a mid-rise residential building on Chicago Avenue in downtown Evanston — Wednesday night. Both the commission and the City Council had rejected Horizon’s first three attempts at approval over concerns with the building’s proposed height, impact to surrounding properties and lack of units dedicated to affordable housing.

    The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian and Evanston Township High School held the first community powwow to commemorate Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday night. A powwow is aNative American celebration that includes singing, dancing, crafting and reconnecting with old friends. Powwows can occur for any reason. Monday’s powwow took place in the Evanston Township High School fieldhouse where vendors offered wares during dancing performances.

    The city remains firm on dismissing a class action suit from the six plaintiffs who allege the reparations program discriminates against them. Evanston lawyers responded to the opposition Oct. 2 in new court documents reiterating that plaintiffs were not “able and ready” to apply in 2021. The six plaintiffs — Margot Flinn, Carol Johnson, Stasys Neimanas, Barbara Regard, Henry Regard and Stephen Weiland — who are represented by conservative activist group Judicial Watch filed their opposition Sept.
