A little more than two weeks after Pope Francis died, the College of Cardinals on Thursday in Vatican City announced their selection of the first American pope: Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was born in Chicago in 1955. Prevost took the name Pope Leo XIV, the first to choose Leo since Leo XIII, an Italian pope who died in 1903. Leo XIII was known for being outspoken in support of working people’s right to a living wage.

Daniel Biss has declared victory in his campaign for a second term as mayor Tuesday after challenger Jeff Boarini called him to concede the race. With all precincts reporting as of 10 p.m., Tuesday, Biss had 10,350 votes representing over 62% of the vote share against Boarini’s 6,321 (38%). These are unofficial results, and will change as remaining mail-in ballots are counted over the next two weeks.

The number of students taking and passing college credit courses rose during the 2023-2024 school year, according to the post-high school report presented by ETHS staff at the Monday District 202 Board of Education meeting. However, the percentages of students who actually enrolled in college from ETHS dropped for the second year in a row, and only around half of those who enrolled graduated in six years or less, according to the report.

Evanston Township High School financial staff are initiating the process to issue $15 million in bonds this year, a plan that would help the district address violations cited on the school’s health life safety survey from 2023. The total cost of cited violations is more than $60 million, and the $15 million would go toward addressing HVAC deficiencies in the school’s gym wing.
