The Socio-economic and Education Survey was commissioned by Siddaramaiah during his first tenure as CM in 2014, and was undertaken at a cost of ₹169 crore. It was finally submitted to the state government on February 29, 2024. After close to 10 years of inordinate delay, the findings are yet to see the light of day.

Last week, following orders from a Special Court for People’s Representatives in Bengaluru, the Lokayukta Police registered an FIR in Mysuru against Siddaramaiah, his wife and two others in the MUDA case. This has set the ball rolling for what is sure to be a protracted battle. Even as its confrontation with the Raj Bhavan continues, the Congress also has to worry about the united onslaught of BJP and JD(S), whose demand for Siddaramaiah’s resignation has been growing in chorus.

Come October, the Congress-ruled Karnataka govt will host a conclave to form an “economic alliance” with “growth-oriented” States. This includes Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi, and Punjab. Among the issues to be discussed will be the unfair devolution of taxes to States by the Centre. Under the 15th Finance Commission Karnataka’s share in horizontal devolution slumped to 3.64% from 4.71% in the 14th FC, leaving the State feeling marginalised.

Karnataka’s highly ambitious, much-awaited Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Supply Project was inaugurated on September 6 by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The project was launched in 2014 when the Congress government was in power. It proposes to ease the drinking water woes of nearly 75 lakh people in drought-prone Kolar, Chickballapur, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts.

On August 17, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot granted sanction for prosecution, paving the way for an investigation against CM Siddaramaiah related to alleged irregularities in allotment of MUDA sites. Siddaramaiah shot back with a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court, questioning the legality of the sanction permitting investigation against him under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act and prosecution under Section 218 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
