For the first time in more than two decades, a comprehensive study is underway testing more than 30 popular beaches along the Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Spokane River for harmful contaminants from decades of mining runoff.

    SPOKANE, Wash -- One person is hurt, and a dog was killed in an early morning house fire on Spokane's south hill. It happened at Havana Street near 39th Avenue, just a few blocks south of Chase Middle School. According to the Spokane Fire Department, the call came in just before 3 a.m. The fire is out, but it severely damaged the home and garage. Fire crews on scene say a woman was able to make it out of the home safely, but a man had to be rescued by firefighters and taken to the hospital.

    SPOKANE, Wash -- Popular trails in the Glenrose and Dishman Hills Natural Area are back open. Trails have been closed since February for forest health and tree thinning work. During this time, Dishman Hills Natural Area Trailhead, Glenrose Trailhead and Camp Caro Trailhead have been closed to the public. According to Spokane County Parks and Recreation, the objective of this work was to improve forest health and reduce the risk of catastrophic fires.

Fire crews on scene say one person was able to make it out of the home safely, but another person was removed by fire crews and taken to the hospital.
