The owners of a shopping centre in Melbourne's inner-north say they have been told a beloved bear statue that was stolen from the precinct is unlikely to be returned. 'Sparkly Bear', a life-sized bronze bear statue, was cut down using an angle-grinder and stolen from Barkly Square in Brunswick in the early hours of Wednesday, September 11. The designers of the artwork, Sydney-based artists Gillie and Marc, pleaded for the safe return of Sparkly Bear, which is estimated to be worth $60,000.

Victoria's Werribee Open Range Zoo has welcomed the birth of a male southern white rhino, more than a year after the passing of a female calf. The female calf, the first southern white rhino to be born at the zoo in almost a decade, died after 11-year-old mother Kipenzi "leaned her two-tonne physique onto her calf", resulting in fatal trauma. Sixteen months on, Kipenzi has once again given birth, this time to a 60-kilogram male, who the zoo says is forming a "remarkable bond" with his mother.

Musicians passed a vote of no confidence in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's managing director and operating officer on Friday night after the cancellation of a performance by a pianist who spoke about the conflict in Gaza. In a letter to the Board, the musicians say there has been a "continued declining morale" in the organisation.
