GAINESVILLE — Florida wrapped up spring practice on Saturday with the annual Orange and Blue game in The Swamp. With plentiful sunshine and a celebration of the 2025 National Champion Florida Gators basketball team held at halftime, with 56,203 fans on hand for the occasion, it was the largest attendance for a spring game in the Billy Napier era and largest for a spring game at Florida since 2009.

Walter Clayton Jr., grinning like an alligator, stood on top of a ladder in the Alamodome with loops of national championship net draped around his neck, and gave one final Gator chomp before descending back to the same plane as the mere mortals who will be long forgotten years from now when Florida basketball fans still talk about Clayton and the way he willed his team to the 2025 national championship.

SAN ANTONIO — Was there any other way for this year to end? The greatest season of SEC basketball ever played was always going to end with an SEC team winning the national championship, right? In a year when the SEC was the best league in the history of multiple analytical databases, surely it would end with one of the SEC powers cutting down the nets in San Antonio, wouldn’t it? For most of 40 minutes on Monday night, it looked like it wasn’t going to happen that way.

SAN ANTONIO — In an instant classic of SEC Champions befitting the grandness of the Final Four stage, Florida outlasted Auburn 79-73 on Saturday night to advance to the national championship game. Florida won the game for largely the same reason they won 34 other games this season: when it mattered most, Todd Golden‘s outstanding guards made more plays than the other team’s guards.
