Hobbyist Jonathan Tan showcases the beauty of the old-school stools and tables in the void decks of Singapore’s Housing Board buildings. The photo series, Lepak Downstairs, was named after the colloquial term for hanging out at the void deck. The pictures, which were taken in estates from Tampines to Telok Blangah, exude an honest simplicity and an unmistakable sense of nostalgia. To photography enthusiast Jonathan Tan, a void deck is anything but void.

Madam Lau Kan How had her first stroke when she was 58 years old. The former superintendent of schools was addressing a crowd at a mathematics conference in 2000 when she realised she “was not speaking” what she wanted to say. She stopped her speech and was sent to the hospital immediately. The single mother of three retired from civil service soon after, although she continued to travel to other countries to run courses as an education consultant.
