The Southeast Fresno Community Economic Development Association (SEFCEDA) hosted its annual Trailblazers for Prosperity awards luncheon Wednesday. Caltrans remembers fallen workers in solemn ceremony

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A somber ceremony took place today to recognize the men and women killed while working on the state's roadways. Since 1921, 194 Caltrans workers have died on the job. The latest fatality, Alexander Rodish, was added to the list just last summer. He died while working on the 5 freeway in Southern California last summer. The Highway Worker's Memorial ceremony features 194 cones, one for each person who has died.
Diocese of Fresno remembers Pope Francis

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As bells tolled in Vatican City Monday, commemorating the death of Pope Francis, so did the bells at St. John's Cathedral in downtown Fresno. Black fabric has been draped around the front door of the cathedral and around a photo of the pope inside. Notably the pontiff's passing comes during the holiest time in the Christian calendar, just hours after marking Easter Sunday with thousands in Saint Peter's Square which would become his final public appearance.

The looming deadline is sending large crowds of people to California Department of Motor Vehicles offices throughout the state. City of Fresno launches street improvement projects

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The City of Fresno's street paving season has begun. It is investing $34 million in road improvements. It is being funded by Measure C revenue, as well as state and federal dollars. "Your local tax dollars are going right back into your local neighborhoods," said Nelson Esparza, Fresno City Councilmember. The first on the list is McKinley Avenue from Chestnut to Peach. Over the next four weeks, crews will scrape up the old asphalt, remove it, and repave it.

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Name after name, each person who stepped up to receive a card to hang on this tree in Merced's Courthouse Park represents a person killed at the hands of a criminal. "I always send the notes to my boys letting them know that I miss them. And I love them. And I thank them for being my sons," Marylene Riley. Her sons were killed 16 and 17 years ago. She never misses this Victims' Rights Ceremony, a yearly occasion for many of the families here.

Historic Chinatown building being demolished for affordable housing

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The 100-year-old 'Bow on Tong' building in downtown Fresno's Chinatown is being demolished to make way for a new affordable housing project. "The site we are standing on today hold deep historical significance, but also one that has faced some long-standing challenges here in Chinatown," said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer. A fire destroyed the building in March of 2022. Dyer said state funding allowed the city to purchase it in January.
70 affordable housing units open in Oakhurst

For years, getting more affordable housing in Oakhurst has been a challenge, but today, a major step forward. A ribbon cutting was held at River Grove apartments on Tuesday. The complex is now home to Jessica Turner, who was living in her car just a year ago. "I came from a domestic violence traumatic brain injury and sexual assault that made me have a nervous breakdown," said Turner.
Fresno County aims to make walk routes to schools safer

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno County is working to make the walk to school safer. Fresno County Department of Public Works and Planning department received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to evaluate areas around some schools through so-called "walk audits.""Walk around the school, walk around and show them how people get to and from school, look at the areas where they might get picked up and dropped off," said Erin Haagenson, program manager for the department.
