COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Three unclaimed veterans received a fitting final farewell on Friday morning. Hundreds gathered at Fort Jackson National Cemetery for a burial ceremony and a final salute. The veterans’ names are Sergeant Ronald Kautz, Specialist 5 Stanley Harris, and Private First Class Rick Myers. These three veterans died without any family, and so all of the strangers served as their loved ones on Friday. Little is known about the men.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - New townhomes along Broad River Road in Columbia are one step closer to becoming a reality after the city’s planning commission gave the initial go-ahead to the project at a meeting on Thursday afternoon. The 214 townhome development, preliminarily called Broad Vista Towns, would be located at 4000 Broad River Road.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - Community members in Lexington County have been looking for safety solutions along what they call a “dangerous” curve, and asked for more signs to cut down on crashes. There have been 19 crashes in the last three years along Bush River Road as it turns into Tram Road near St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Six people have been injured. That is according to data from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Since Columbia Water declared responsiveness to customers a “crisis” more than three years ago, its work order backlog has been significantly reduced, but the department is still facing staffing shortages. At its peak, Columbia Water said it had more than 6,000 open work orders to address. This includes everything from water leaks to hydrant repairs and yard restorations. Internal documents reveal that over the last year, the backlog has gotten better.

ELGIN, S.C. (WIS) - There were more tremors in the Midlands overnight in the midst of an ongoing earthquake swarm. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake hit near Elgin at around 1:00 A.M. Thursday. Seismologists say there have been nearly 100 since the swarm began in late 2021. RELATED STORIES:Daniel Frost, an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina, said this is one of the larger swarms he studied.
