Harris County spent about $1.8 million in taxpayer funds for Xavier Davis to defend himself from the death penalty, court records show, but the true cost is likely higher. Prosecutors worked more than 2,200 hours during the trial, but neither their salaries nor the cost of the state’s witnesses and experts are included in that tally. The district attorney’s office has not answered a records request outlining their spending.
