SPOKANE, Wash. — The hiss of pressure releasing from beer brewing equipment echoed on the walls of Steve Snider's Cheney home, the same walls where Snider's childhood rosary hangs from the corner of a piece of art. While brewing equipment sits front and center in Snider's dining room, the small reminders of his faith hang in many corners of his home. Those reminders are not front and center because Snider's connection to the Catholic Church has been on the back burner for decades.

Many big box stores and major retail chains are closing across the US, including in Indy. So for the love of all things local, we’re exploring some of our favorite unique alternatives to the familiar franchises. This craft store’s remaining Indiana locations are set to shut down by the end of May, but you can find plenty of art supplies — from paints to sewing supplies — at Griffy’s Art Supply at The Stutz and Crimson Tate Modern Quilter on Mass Ave. There’s plenty more where that came from.

Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, “Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance.” Perhaps he was speaking from his own experience; Kurt’s father and grandfather were both famous architects who helped design some of Indy’s most iconic buildings. Let’s take a look at a few of the buildings the Vonnegut family designed that are still standing today.

RT @theINDYtoday: Tomorrow the "Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley: Let the World See" exhibit opens at @TCMIndy through Sun., Oct. 30. #atTCM…

Today, I’m celebrating my one-year work anniversary with @theINDYtoday + @6amcity 🥳 This past year has gone by so fast and I’m so grateful to have found a job that I truly love — and one that has given me so many cool opportunities along the way. 🗞 #INDYtoday https://t.co/gLOJBxBtxy

I’m still nerding out over the fact that my signature is on an official document that will be placed in a time capsule at @PresBenHarrison. 🇺🇸 It was an honor to attend this ceremony! https://t.co/wFsIlt0BAs

Today, the @PresBenHarrison presidential site held a special dedication ceremony to unveil the Charters of Freedom — replicas of the United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence + the Bill of Rights. Ironically, it's also Flag Day. 🇺🇸 https://t.co/ah48nn3QAx
