Fatal Tornadoes Leave Trail of Death and Destruction

Tornadoes left a trail of destruction Saturday night in communities across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. They were spawned by a severe storm system in the Southern Plains that left at least two dead in Texas, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines. Several homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed and rescue workers were looking for people trapped or injured. The storms are moving east today, with nearly 20 million people at risk.

The National Weather Service now says two tornadoes hit Bell County on Wednesday. According to preliminary reports, an EF-2 tornado started near the Morgan's Point Resort on Belton Lake and was on the ground for about five minutes. This twister was responsible for the 30 injuries reported, and it caused significant damage to homes and businesses as it tracked to the southeast. That storm had wind speeds measured at 120-miles per hour.

Liberty County Adds An Hour to Voting

Due to the recent rain and high water, election officials in Liberty County have extended today's May 4 th Special Election voting hours until 8pm. Three polling locations are closed:Plum Grove City Hall, Tarkington Prairie Baptist Church and the Santa Fe Administration Building (Colony Ridge). Four Shot Outside South Houston Convenience Store

Four people sustain non-life-threatening injuries when shot last night at a South Houston gas station. The shooting occurred on Cullen Blvd. just north of the South Loop 610 shortly after 11. Three passengers in each of the vehicles opened fire. Three men and a woman were injured. They were able to transport themselves to a hospital. photo: Getty Images
Houston Opens Flood Information Center

The city of Houston has opened the joint information center. It was opened Friday morning as the state deploys additional high water resources including extra high-water vehicles.. The storms are expected to continue through weekend. Expect the San Jacinto River to crest this weekend. The Texas Department of Transportation in Lufkin has closed US 59 from Shepherd to Splendora due to major flooding in the Cleveland area. Drivers can detour from State Highway 150 to New Waverly to Interstate 45.

Our doom-scrolling portends doom for our vision. In human evolution good vision was critical to survival. Dwelling in caves we found ways to paint on walls and had to read those. The writing got smaller around 500 BC when scrolls were invented, followed by books. Apple caused us to all read little hand-held telephones, and our vision has focused more sharply. Now myopia is on the rise. We need glasses to see distances.
HISD Pulls Back Offer to Teachers

The Houston ISD says budget constraints will keep it from paying teacher retention bonuses that were planned for the upcoming school year. The district had offered retention incentives of a thousand to two-thousand dollars as part of the compensation plan for the year. Those bonuses are off the table, but summer school teachers are still eligible to receive up to eight-thousand-dollars.
