Britain's former deputy prime minister John Prescott has died aged 86 following a battle with Alzheimer’s, with Tony Blair leading tributes to him as a “committed and loyal” public servant. Mr Prescott’s family, who announced his death, said he had “spent his life trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment”. The former trade union activist and ex-merchant seaman died “peacefully” and surrounded by relatives at his care home, they said.

Downing Street has apologised after serving meat and alcohol at its Diwali celebration event - actions which left a Leicester MP “greatly concerned”. Shivani Raja, the Conservative MP for Leicester East is among many to have complained about the move and said it showed “a disappointing lack of knowledge" about the festival. Number 10 said a “mistake” had been made in the organisation of the event and sought to assure the community “it will not happen again”.

Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson fell victim to theft while attending a conference of senior police officers, it has been revealed. Dame Diana was delivering a speech at the annual Police Superintendents' Conference on Tuesday, outlining the Government's plans to enhance neighbourhood policing. Warwickshire Police is currently investigating a report of a purse theft at a hotel on the B4115 in Kenilworth.
