When he made his first film, “Forced Landing on Planet Eggatron,” Hoyt Yeatman created characters out of blown-out eggs with pipe-cleaner limbs. He was only 8. Now his work is mostly digital. But the visual effects expert, who won an Oscar in 1989 for “The Abyss,” still jumps at any opportunity to tinker. So he turns to Halloween for his hands-on fix, transforming the front of his Tudor home in Camarillo into the playfully eerie Wildwood Haunts. His is not your average store-bought decorating affair.

They came together on a late fall afternoon, 15 young people in search of community. In a large room in Lewiston with walls that said hello in multiple languages, they ate pizza and gathered in chairs arranged in a circle – immigrants, children of immigrants, asylum seekers.

The 18 people who were killed in Lewiston on Oct. 25 will forever be associated with the worst mass shooting in Maine history. But they had rich lives worth remembering apart from that terrible night – as mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, grandparents and in one case a high school student. And they had plans. Aaron Young, 14, was starting to get really good at bowling. Steve Vozzella was about to celebrate his first wedding anniversary.
