Phoenix sweltered in 117-degree heat last week and by the weekend, wind stirred up some pretty impressive dust devils in some parts of the region, but was that a signal that the monsoon is upon us? Not quite. While heat is needed to jump-start the summer thunderstorm season and dusty skies can precede the first real storm activity, what we saw last week was mostly just June heat and wind.

Officially, Arizona's monsoon season starts on June 15 and continues through Sept. 30, but that's only a calendar definition. The summer thunderstorm season needs a series of hot days and a shift in wind direction for the first storms to develop. Typically, the first monsoon storms develop around the first week of July.

Phoenix reached 122 degrees on June 26, 1990, and 35 years later, that remains the hottest day on record at Sky Harbor International Airport. Other heat records have been broken in recent years, including streaks of 100-degree and 110-degree days, but the big one has stood. The state's climatologist says exceeding 122 degrees is not impossible, but the record was "rare" to begin with. Phoenix has broken just about every heat record in the last few years, except the big one: 122 degrees.

Hurricane Erick could grow into a Category 3 storm later today as it moves toward Mexico's Pacific coast. U.S. officials issued a travel advisory for people headed to Mexico, warning of flight delays or flooded roadways. Hurricane Erick has formed in the Pacific just ahead of the Juneteenth holiday weekend, potentially disrupting travel plans for Arizonans heading to Mexico.

A high-pressure ridge is building over the Southwest, and forecasters say temperatures will soar past 110 degrees. The National Weather Service has posted an excessive heat watch from June 14-16 with temperatures nearing 114 degrees. The heat wave could be the first signs that the monsoon is looming. The official season starts June 15, but it will take a stretch of hot days to bring the first change in weather.
