The state can expect a 'critical' fire season due to months of extreme short-term drought, Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management officials told Gov. Katie Hobbs during a briefing March 31. “This is one of the most critical years that we’ve seen in our careers,” said John Truett, fire management officer for the Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

The current short-term drought is as bad or worse than droughts in 2017 and 2020, according to a UA researcher, stretching across summer, fall and winter. Tree ring research show prolonged dry periods are normal in Arizona, but the current drought, in its third decade, is one of the worst in 1,200 years or more. The lack of snowpack could raise risks of wildfire in the high country, bringing an early start to peak fire activity. An active monsoon could ease the threat.

As temperatures climb in the Valley, the National Weather Service Phoenix is reminding pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe from the heat. NWS issued a heat safety warning, urging residents to avoid leaving pets outdoors for extended periods and ensure they have access to plenty of water. One of the biggest dangers? Hot cars. Even a few minutes inside a parked vehicle can be deadly for animals, even when cracking the windows.

A bicyclist was killed in west Phoenix on March 28 after being hit by a vehicle, and Phoenix police believe two drivers were involved in the crash. The police responded to the scene at 11:15 p.m. near 91st and Highland avenues, where they found a woman in her 50s lying injured in the road after being struck while riding her bike. Despite first responders' efforts, she died at the scene of the crash. Police reported there were two vehicles involved in the crash and both drivers fled the scene.
