A student at the University of Hong Kong has become the latest victim of a phone scam after she was cheated out of HK$9.2 million (US$1.1 million), the Post has learned. A source said on Friday the mainland Chinese woman fell victim to the scam and that police were searching for two fraudsters. Last month, the force said they had arrested 154 people in a three-week crackdown on fraudsters who used internet and phone scams to cheat their victims out of more than HK$280 million.

Registrations of local and non-local companies in Hong Kong reached all-time highs in 2024, according to authorities. While the Companies Registry said on Friday that it had made the process easier, a lawmaker attributed the increase to the government’s recent aggressive efforts in attracting overseas companies. Last year, 145,053 local businesses were established, bringing the total number of firms registered under the Companies Ordinance to 1.46 million.

One more victim from Hong Kong has been released from a forced labour camp in Southeast Asia, bringing down the number of missing persons to 11, the Post has learned. According to a government source, the victim will return to the city on Thursday at the earliest. A total of 12 victims from the city were stranded at scam centres in Thai-Myanmar or Myanmar-Laos border areas, according to the Security Bureau.

Emergency responders have rescued two hikers trapped in a hill fire that raged for more than four hours in Hong Kong’s Yuen Long. Police said they were alerted to the fire at Kai Kung Leng, a mountain range in Lam Tsuen Country Park, at about 5.30pm on Saturday. A subsequent report was received around 6.30pm about two hikers – a man and a woman – who were stranded in the same area due to the fire and strong wind. The two started hiking at around 3pm.
