Hong Kong clinics have received a surge in inquiries and bookings for influenza jabs following the death of popular Taiwanese actress Barbie “Big S” Hsu Shi-yuan, who died from pneumonia after contracting flu. Hsu’s death, which was publicly revealed on Monday and happened while she was travelling in Japan with her family, not only sent shock waves through the Chinese-speaking world, but also appeared to prompt more Hongkongers to get flu vaccinations.

Registrations of local and non-local companies in Hong Kong reached all-time highs in 2024, according to authorities. While the Companies Registry said on Friday that it had made the process easier, a lawmaker attributed the increase to the government’s recent aggressive efforts in attracting overseas companies. Last year, 145,053 local businesses were established, bringing the total number of firms registered under the Companies Ordinance to 1.46 million.

The new president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has said he will explore setting up a college system for master’s and doctoral students that follows the institution’s existing model for undergraduates to boost holistic learning. Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming also said he would stick to the principles of fairness and equality when it came to allocating resources, noting the humanities and the sciences were of equal importance.

A government adviser on vaccines has called for requiring all schools in Hong Kong to arrange on-campus influenza inoculations for students and demanding explanations from institutions that refuse to take part. Professor Lau Yu-lung, chairman of the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases, on Monday also defended the government’s earlier move to name 168 schools that had refused to join an optional vaccine outreach drive. Some principals had hit out at authorities over the decision.
