Traditionally, Britain was regarded as the class society. And class was pre-eminent among the factors used to explain political party allegiance. In broad terms, working-class voters chose Labour, the party set up to represent them. Middle-class voters chose the Conservatives, the party that represented homeowners and business owners. Since the 1960s, there has been a decline in class-based voting. Our social background is no longer such a good predictor of our party.

It’s easy to discount the positive impact of a thriving natural environment on our health, largely because many of us view ourselves as separate from nature. In fact, we rely heavily on biodiversity — from the food we eat to the air we breathe as well as limiting disease (1). In industry we refer to this as ‘Ecosystem Services’, the direct and indirect benefits that contribute to human wellbeing and health (2).

The famous adage ‘It’s the economy, stupid’ has been used to explain election outcomes. But other aspects of government performance receive less attention. It is often thought that Indian voters do not pay attention to health as a political issue. The Lokniti-CSDS survey data allows us to assess the extent to which voters do hold the government to account on this issue. We asked voters to say whether different services have got better, stayed the same, or got worse over the past five years.
