On Oct. 7, Israel declared war on Hamas, a militant group in Gaza, in response to a surprise attack by the group. Following the attack and the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region, community members at USF and in San Francisco have responded to the conflict with a number of protest actions, fundraising events, educational opportunities, and statements of support.

The smell of freshly made french fries and the sound of order numbers being called drift out of Uncle Boy’s door onto the corner of Balboa Street and Fourth Avenue. Inside the Filipinx-owned restaurant, which is open every day except Monday, framed posters and issues of Sporting Green hang on the purple-gray wall, chronicling past victories of the San Francisco Giants, 49ers, and Golden State Warriors.

The USF Food Pantry, which provides free food and toiletries to students, opened for the first time five years ago on Sept. 21, 2018 in a closet in Gleeson Library’s basement. Since its inception, it has grown substantially, finding a new home in the library’s atrium and providing fresh bread, produce, and nonperishable goods to the USF community every other Friday. The pantry’s produce tables are staffed with volunteers through the Martín-Baró Scholars program.

USF students and community members gathered at Gleeson Plaza on Sunday night for a memorial service honoring Ryan Mak, a senior politics major who died on Aug. 18, aged 22, due to a blockage of blood vessels in his heart. Mak’s friends, peers, and mentors came together in their shared grief and immense gratitude for having known him. Mak was a beloved student, brother, friend, and Swiftie who was actively and passionately engaged in the USF community.

I am a chronically busy person. The way my brain works means that in order to motivate myself to get things done, I need to have so much on my plate that I don’t have time to waste. That was my way of life in high school — do homework in class, crochet during play rehearsal breaks, and play Dungeons & Dragons and The Sims 4 on weekends. But college is a different monster entirely.
