The doors led nowhere, standing off their hinges in a white-walled gallery at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s new retrospective of the late Bay Area artist’s work.

Arianna Khmelniuk laid out hundreds of small bottles with labels like "galaxolide ipm 10%" and "cedarwood virginia eden 10%" on an ochre table in her Richmond lab. She selected one and passed it to her perfume-making workshop attendees. "What do you feel when you smell it?" she asked. "It smells like a dead seagull," said one participant, who hoped to make a fragrance that evoked a cold, misty ocean. "Yes!" Khmelniuk exclaimed.
