Patricia Brewer, 67, was called up to sit on a two-week trial at Truro Crown Court on June 9 but the next day she refused to engage with the jury service and made up potential connections with some witnesses. She said it was because she felt anxious about jury service and no longer wanted to do it.

Everyone who has been charged with an offence, from minor charges to the most serious, appears initially before the magistrates. The most serious cases are then sent to the crown court. If a defendant pleads guilty, they could be sentenced straight away or have the matter put back for a pre-sentence report.

    A disgraced secondary school science teacher in Cornwall been barred for life from ever teaching over inappropriate behaviour with a pupil. Antony Jones exchanged messages on Facebook Messenger and set up a Facebook group with female pupils where he made inappropriate comments, asked them for pictures of themselves, asked them out for drinks in the pub or for a bite to eat and told them how he found them pretty and how he missed them.

    A former English teacher and safeguarding lead has been found not guilty of having sex with a pupil. John Harvey, a former deputy head teacher at Penryn College, had been accused of having befriended a pupil and having sexual intercourse with her on several occasions. The 51-year-old from Perranwell Station faced two counts of inappropriate sexual behaviour with a 16-year-old girl while being in a position of trust and abusing that trust.
