A controversial trial of road changes in Heavitree and Whipton, which aims to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, is under way. Installation has begun on a number of bollards and planters – or what the council calls ‘modal filters’ – to block off through-traffic. The plans also include gates to allow buses through but not cars. The aim is to stop through-traffic ‘rat-running’ through residential areas and boost cycling and walking.

Dozens of new solar panels will be put on a field in Exeter, despite concerns about their impact on the landscape. Exeter City Council’s planning committee narrowly approved the application by the university, in which ground-mounted panels and associated infrastructure will be installed in Duryard Valley Park. It is publicly accessible land – designated a site of nature conservation importance and a county wildlife site – owned by the university.

Cameras could be installed along a road in Exeter where some drivers are still ignoring ‘no entry’ signs. A filter was installed on Wonford Road in 2021, permitting access only for buses and bicycles to help improve conditions for them, but councillors have been told that many other vehicles are still driving through.
