Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Aaron Judge hit consecutive home runs on the first three pitches of the game—a first since pitch counts have been recorded. Judge added two more homers, including a grand slam. This offensive explosion has been partially attributed to some players’ adoption of new bats.

Another year, another positive step forward for NCAA women’s basketball. The 2024–2025 NCAA women’s basketball regular season averaged 280,000 viewers across 87 games on ESPN networks (ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU), up 3% from last year, and the highest on ESPN networks since the 2008–2009 season, the company announced Monday. ESPN saw its strongest viewership gains on ABC and ESPN, the networks with the largest distribution.

Its investors, according to the Financial Times, include the Singapore government, SC Holdings, Riyadh’s Public Investment Fund, UBS,Skype founder Geoff Prentice, former Facebook executive Grady Burnett. VC firm Quiet Capital and tech investor Byron Deeter are reportedly raising capital.

A report about an expensive effort to launch a new international basketball league made waves late Wednesday. Bloombergreported that a group of investors advised by Maverick Carter, a childhood friend and longtime business partner of LeBron James, has tapped UBS and Evercore to raise up to $5 billion to set up a new international league “to rival the National Basketball Association,” in Bloomberg’s phrasing.

The Miami Heat suspended six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler for seven games Friday following months of media reports of the guard’s desire for a trade, as well as a Thursday night press conference where he made his dissatisfaction clear. “I want to see me getting my joy back playing basketball. Wherever that may be, we’ll find out here pretty soon,” Butler said after a Thursday game in which he scored only nine points.
