Seven people have been taken to hospital after taking the sleeping medication Zopiclone, prompting concerns over a “potential contaminated batch”. Cleveland Police said it had received reports on Friday of the adults being taken to North Tees General Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham. The force is also investigating the death of one man thought to have taken Zopiclone.

Many of the most seriously injured people on a turbulence-hit flight on which a British man died need spinal operations, a hospital said. A spokesman for Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok said six Britons are among 20 people still in intensive care. The hospital has provided medical care to a total of 104 people who were on the Singapore Airlines flight from Heathrow to Singapore which diverted to the Thai capital.

A dog owner has been mauled to death by her two registered XL bullies in the latest tragedy involving the banned breed. The woman, aged in her 50s, was fatally attacked in Cornwall Close, Hornchurch, east London, just after 1pm on Monday. Photographs showed a blue forensic tent that had been put up outside her home in the small residential street. Police said she was pronounced dead at the scene and the two registered dogs were seized after being contained in a room.

A teacher has been found guilty of having sex with two schoolboys. Rebecca Joynes, 30, groomed the youngsters from the age of 15, Manchester Crown Court heard, and was on bail for sexual activity with the first child, boy A, when she began having sex with the second, boy B, who she went on to become pregnant by - revealing the news in a bizarre game. Neither teen must be identified.

The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, has been spotted in Whitley Bay on the north east coast, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Wokingham in Berkshire. They were also spotted in Suffolk, Kent, Hampshire and Liverpool. The sightings have reached as far as Ireland, with the Irish weather service Met Eireann posting images of the lights in Dublin and at Shannon Airport in Co Clare.

The mastermind of an armed robbery that ended in a police officer being shot dead has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 40 years. Pc Sharon Beshenivsky’s family watched from court as the last member of the gang responsible for the armed raid that claimed her life was sentenced after almost 20 years. Pc Beshenivsky was killed on her daughter’s fourth birthday while interrupting a robbery at family-run Universal Express travel agents in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in November 2005.

Chemicals in flavoured vapes could be highly toxic when heated, new research suggests. The study found that 505 hazardous chemicals, including 127 which are acutely toxic, and 153 health hazards, are formed as a result of vaping. Researchers used AI to simulate the effects of heating chemicals found in 180 vape flavours. The scientists suggest their approach may help to reveal the longer-term health risks of vaping in advance of clinical diseases emerging in the general population.

A teenager who stabbed another teenager to death with a large hunting-style knife at a 16th birthday party has been detained for life. Shane Cunningham fatally stabbed Mikey Roynon, 16, in the neck with the large knife during a house party in Bath, Somerset, in June last year. The 16-year-old was convicted of murder while his two friends were convicted of manslaughter after being acquitted of the more serious charge.
