The Northern Lights has lit up the night sky with rare sightings across the country. The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, has been spotted in Whitley Bay on the north east coast, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Wokingham in Berkshire. They were also spotted in Suffolk, Kent, Hampshire and Liverpool. The sightings have reached as far as Ireland, with the Irish weather service Met Eireann posting images of the lights in Dublin and at Shannon Airport in Co Clare.

The family of the man who killed six people in a horrifying knife attack in a Sydney shopping mall recognised him on TV footage of the atrocity. In a statement released today the family of the killer, who attacked shoppers at random on Saturday afternoon described his actions as “horrific” and said he had suffered mental health issues “since he was a teenager”.

The knife attacker who killed six people in a stabbing spree at a Sydney shopping centre before being shot dead was a 40-year-old man with mental health issues, police have said. New South Wales Police said they had identified the attacker as Joel Cauchi, of Queensland, and do not think he was motivated by terrorism. The lone knifeman attacked shoppers on Saturday afternoon at the Westfield shopping centre in the suburb of Bondi Junction in eastern Sydney.
